Portraits & People

I’ve always loved sketching the people around me—-friends, strangers, on the bus, at parties, sleeping, playing music.  This obsessive practice lead to portrait painting, which I experience with the same thrill and challenge that another might find in skydiving.

The colorful acrylic painting is a large-scale mural in the main hall of the Orendo Building on Othello Square in Seattle. It represents three women who made invaluable contributions to children’s health care in Seattle: Helen Hicks (right), Odessa Brown (middle), and Anna Clise (left), and the buildings in Seattle where their work continues. The design process included interviews with the women’s living family members, a powerful gift to receive.
